Minor Oral Surgery

The Minor Oral Surgery (MOS) service is carried out by specialist Oral SurgeonĀ  with special interests in oral surgery. Our specialist Oral Surgeons will carry out an initial assessment and complete any necessary surgical treatment under local anaesthesia.

Oral surgery is an area of dentistry which focuses on the treatment and management of the head, face and jaw irregularities that require surgical treatment as well as those concerning the hard and soft tissues of the mouth.

Whilst extraction of teeth, including wisdom teeth, is the most common procedure that is carried out by an oral surgeon, other procedures may involve surgery to support the use of orthodontics as well as the placement of dental implants to replace a missing teeth.

There are different types of minor oral surgery:

Tooth extraction

If a tooth is damaged beyond repair and cannot be saved by any other dental treatment it may need to be extracted. Teeth may also need to be extracted prior to orthodontic treatment in order to create space to straighten teeth, we will discuss this with you on your consultation.

Wisdom teeth removal

If a wisdom tooth has grown into the wrong place and is causing pain, difficulty in cleaning, improper eruption or impaction the tooth may need to be surgically removed. This may involve making an incision into the gums to gain better access to remove the tooth.

Apicectomy

This is a surgical procedure to place a filling at the end of a root filled tooth root to remove any infection and promote healing in the tooth and surrounding tissues.
