Oral Hygiene

Oral Hygiene

At Redenham Dental we believe in preventing dental disease, and a key part of that is undergoing routine cleaning with the hygienist to maintain a beautiful and healthy smile. The hygienist will remove hazardous plaque (also known as a biofilm) from the teeth and gums, as well as rigid deposits like tartar, below the gum line.

What happens at a dental hygiene appointment?

During your first visit, the dentist will thoroughly examine your teeth and gums. The dental hygienist will educate you on how to maintain great oral hygiene during a 30- to 60-minute session.  During your visit the dentist will clean them properly, then polish them. We will complete the visit by giving you detailed instruction on how to improve your cleaning routine at home and demonstrating, prior to recommending the right cleaning aids. If you do suffer from advanced disease or have a large amount of debris built up on your teeth, we may recommend the cleaning is delivered over a number of visits to allow the dentist to spend more time in each area of your mouth. Our dentist will advise you on
  • The most effective brushing and flossing techniques for your teeth
  • How to prevent gum diseases (gingivitis and periodontitis)
  • Ways to prevent bad tastes or bad breath (halitosis)
  • The link between some gum diseases and other health problems e.g. heart disease
